Introduction
Madeleine Colaço (Madeleine Matthew Bonnet) Brazilian artist borned in Tangier of French-American parents, married in 1928 a Portuguese journalist and writer Thomaz Ribeiro Colaço. In 1940 they moved to Brazil, escaping from the dictatorship of Salazar.
She studied tapestry in Morocco, France, England and Portugal creating a stitch for embroidery baptized "The Brazilian Stitch" by Marie Cutolie.
The embroided "Sambas" as she refers to her tapestries have a vibrant rhythm obtained by a subtle combination of colors and textures. The blend of different materials: wool, silk, cotton and metallic threads, using different stitches: Brazilian stitch (her creation) "Point coulée " used on the famous Tapisserie de la Reine Matilde (XI century) and arraiolos are used to obtain the creative solution for that work.
